| Welcome to ETSA |
IberSim, a training and simulation event for Spain and Portugal, took place on 27th and 28th October in Madrid with its main aim to bring the Spanish and Portuguese training and simulation industry and user community together. This new initiative enabled training & simulation experts to share their experiences & expertise and to give companies the opportunity to exhibit and showcase their latest innovations. Also, it showed that training and simulation is continuing to develop in Spain and Portugal.
The conference included presentations from system integration companies specialising in training and simulation, technology companies and institutions. Key speakers included VIPs from Antycip Simulation, Indra, NATO, Thales, European Training & Simulation Association and VT MÄK.
The exhibition included displays of the latest products and innovations from Amper Programas, Antycip Simulation, Chemring Defence, Defensa.com, DI-GUY, DiSTI, Nextel Engineering, projectiondesign, Scalable Network Technologies, Thales, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and VT MÄK. Visitors at the exhibition enjoyed networking and looking around the exhibition stands. A number of demonstrations attracted a lot of attention, with it being apparent that there is now a lot more use of Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) technologies by systems integrators.
IberSim took place at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in the School of Computer Engineering, a great venue for this inaugural event. Vino Español was enjoyed by all on the second day, which provided another opportunity for delegates to meet and network.
Not only was there support from Spain and Portugal for IberSim but a total of 12 countries were represented at the event with 200 visitor. IberSim's official media partner was MS&T and the European Training & Simulation Association (ETSA) actively supported the event. Journalists from TSJ, MTSN, Defensa.com and Fuerzas de Defensa y Seguridad also participated at IberSim 2009.
There are already plans to run future events for longer than a day and a half and to attract more users and representatives from the Spanish & Portuguese Ministries of Defence. According to IberSim, the majority of attendees to this year's event would like to see the IberSim 2010 grow. The hope is that IberSim will continue to grow and develop over the coming years and there are plans to develop the IberSim concept in other zones.
IberSim is the beginning of a new era for the training and simulation in the Iberian peninsula. The interest that continues to surround IberSim shows that the role of Spain, Portugal and Latin America for simulation and training is increasing quickly across the world.

European Training & Simulation Association
ETSA represents the European training and simulation community and provides an environment for users and suppliers to exchange opportunities, ideas, information and strategies on training and simulation technology and methodology. It brings together all those that have a professional interest in improving the effectiveness of training and training related interoperability, standards and codes of practice. It represents to governments and other users of training and simulation the non-partisan business interests of the industry.
